Oh, of course! Weapon upgrades should have a drop-down menu.
There should be upgrades for sub-categories instead of just in general- area of effect, number of bullets, reload speed and range.
There should be another drop-down menu for "Ship", with speed, durability and other modifiers.
Third, a drop-down menu for Defense (Planetary Shields, Number of Supporting Ships, Upgrade Supporting Ships and Upgrade Planetary Defenses (perhaps a chance to destroy enemy ships before they hit the planet...).
In response to jrbacon also, Intercept doesn't necessarily work.
To others remarking on the slow pace or difficulty in loading... it requires a fair bit more processing power than most games here.
That may be your problem.
Sure there's a few bugs, although I haven't encountered any, but it's a game just out of beta... There's bound to be a couple that you missed...
What else... Well, the only other thing I can think of mentioning is the lack of comprehensive walkthrough. That would stop some of the more annoying questions from coming in, although a lot of them could already be answered by the FAQ.
I'm not going to give it something as inaccurate as an X/5 rating in a comment, but just so that it gets bumped onto the weekly leaderboard, I'll give it 5/5 on Kong.
Well, that's it! All in all, a great game. Love it!
Back again. ;)
It's shaping up a fair bit better. Once I beat the game, however, the entire screen was compressed into a small rectangle in the top-left.
Also, for some reason the graphics quality has decreased dramatically, although that could just be an attempt to remove lag from the game.
I would note, however, that I NEVER suffered lag when playing, either previously or now when there are enormous amounts of enemies on the screen at once, and personally much preferred the previous level of quality.
Perhaps a little 'Q' in one of the corners might do the trick? For people with terrible computers, they could stick to low quality, whilst people with better computers could stick to high.
An option to pause in-game would be nice. The Cannon does less damage than the Spread Gun and is far slower, despite the fact that Defensive ships are supposed to be pretty much turtles with futuristic weaponry and the ability to fly in outer space. ;)
Mmm... I agree with redPEPPER. The enemy ships don't stand a chance of getting to the planet late in a level, and since they don't fire on you either, they're just flying point-banks.
The only other thing I can think of right now is that sometimes you get stuck at the top of the screen and can't come back down until the end of the level. Highly irritating. *runs out of ideas*
Well, I hope I've made some kind of contribution to society, after I've taken so, so much. Who knows? Maybe I've actually helped someone for once in my life! :D
Hmm... I'm being thick again. I've just played the Power ship thoroughly, and although you can move up, down and sideways, you can't move diagonally.
The wording of renny12's comment confused me.
The Power ship is far too slow. It should at least be able to outspeed the basic enemy ships moderately, or if that's not possible, there should be an option to aim with the mouse.
It wouldn't hurt to increase the speed of all of the ships a bit, as long as you toned down the weapon upgrades accordingly.
Oooh, lastly: I've seen it freeze a couple of times on the cutscenes, for no apparent reason.
It gets stuck on the same animation, or won't move on from a speech between the alien commander and his underling. I've waited several minutes and... nothing...
That's why I thought that the first boss you fight was actually the last, until I saw your comment.
Also, there could be a higher level upgrade which allows you to activate a certain skill by pressing S, which would also vary from type to type.
For example, the Defensive ship could have an Invulnerability Shield, the --- ship could have a Plasma Wave which continously damages all ships within a certain range and a 120 degree fan in front of it and the Special ship could have a Holocaust, which obliterates all ordinary ships on the screen.
These upgrades would allow greater versatility of design and help people make a ship that fits in with their playing style.
Incidentally, thank you for adding the ability to move closer and further away from the enemy.
I just played the Power ship, and I am greatly surprised that it wasn't implemented right away. It's going to be a great game, and already is one in the making. :)
Hmm, what else. (Sorry if I'm being annoying.)
There could be type-specific ship upgrades, to supplement or replace the existing ones.
For example, for the Defensive ship there could be a high-level upgrade to increase the amount of projectiles in the scatter shot, as well as another upgrade to increase damage and another to increase speed of firing, in the place of the single Weapons upgrade.
There should also be an Armor upgrade.
This could also vary from ship to ship: each type would have the generic armor increase, but also a low-level upgrade, such as the ability to turn some of the health of a ship it kills into HP for itself or the Earth's defences or the ability to reflect some of the shots fired at it.
This would have a percentage chance of occuring that would increase with each level of the skill.
Instead of having the upgrades as simply pickupable items, why not have them as ships with symbols on them? Fast-moving, high HP, but if you defeat them...
It would add an element of skill to something that was previously just a randomised bonus, and combined with my other suggestion, it wouldn't be random at all...
It's a game entirely reliant on chance. The only thing that can actually be effected is the firing of the Imp, and that makes little sense.
It's interesting, but it would be nice if there was an element of skill in it... Fun, though.
There should be powerups in the game. Fairly unoriginal, I know, but they are fun. Things like Haste, Invinicibility, etcetra.
They could be placed in levels where they're urgently needed only, as opposed to the ordinary randomisation. Having Haste in a level full of fast-moving ships or Invincibility when battling a fleet of high-damage cruisers would be very useful.
You move slowly for a reason: Once you upgrade your Engine to the maximum, combined with Weapons upgrades you're pretty much decimating the entire battlefield. Any faster and you'd be able to destroy a fleet almost before it entered the screen.
I don't see the point of being able to move forwards and backwards in the screen when the enemies don't, but there you go.
You're welcome. It was worth waiting for... I'm really beginning to like this.
I wouldn't mind a soundtrack to go with it, though. Something that's actually worth listening to.
The final boss (so far) is surprisingly easy to defeat if you constantly upgrade Weapons... I was up to the 120,000 upgrade at the end of the game.
There should be a little more variation in the basic troops. For the first few levels, they're all you have to look at, and they're all exactly the same.
Hmm... I've mentioned some of them already, but I'll address the ones that weren't in my comments.
I didn't notice the Special Ship bug, well done there Renny.
This is just bizarre. The spread gun is faster than the chain gun, it says you gain 100 Diamonds or whatever they are per ship, but instead gives you 25...
There are four options in the Main Menu, all of them Story Mode and lastly...
All four of the upgrades (four!) cost 1000 Diamonds, despite the fact that they are clearly greater of less in value..
