It's always a multiple of 9. There is the same symbol on 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72 and 81 ;-) Which is one of the number you MUST find doing the math

It's an old algebra trick. He can't be wrong. If he got your symbol wrong, you did the math wrong.
